An airport and seaplane base built in Stratford in the 1920's brought Igor Sikorsky to the area to build his flying boats. Then Sikorsky flew his US300 Helicopter in September 1939 in Stratford and produced many helicopters and rotary wing aircraft from that time. Stratford is the birthplace of the American helicopter industry.

Our History Written by Barbara M. Sirois in 1988 Located on the Eastern edge of Fairfield County, Stratford is a coastal New England community of 51,000 residents, comprising 18.7 square miles, enjoying a varied climate of vibrant changing seasons with summer temperatures averaging 82 degrees F. and winter averages of 41 degrees F.

The Office of Planning & Zoning oversees land-use for the Town of Stratford. In addition to the development and implementation of long-range town planning initiatives, the Office administers the receipt of applications for zoning compliance and guidance to various land-use boards and commissions.
