Mesa, city, Maricopa county, south-central Arizona, U.S. The name is Spanish for “tabletop” or “tableland.” A southeastern suburb of Phoenix, the site was settled and founded in 1878 by Mormons who used ancient Hohokam canals for irrigation.

With a population of 517,496 Mesa, Arizona is the 36th largest city in the United States and second largest in the Phoenix-Mesa metro area and is larger than Miami, Minneapolis, Atlanta and St. Louis.

At least ten colleges and universities were located in Mesa, as is the Mesa Arizona Temple, one of the first LDS temples constructed outside of Utah. The city is home to the largest relief airport in the Phoenix area, Mesa Gateway Airport, located in the southeastern corner of the city.
